THE HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY OF FORT MOTTE

ON VIEW JULY 12, 2025 - JUNE 20, 2026

Presented in partnership with the South Carolina State Museum and curated by the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, the exhibit offers an in-depth exploration of a pivotal Revolutionary War battle in South Carolina’s history.

This immersive exhibition showcases a remarkable collection of artifacts, from musket balls to pottery fragments, uncovered through archaeological excavations at the Fort Motte site. Visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the military strategies, personal struggles, and historic outcomes that shaped the Southern campaign of the American Revolution.

This exhibition is made possible in part by a grant from the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250). The funding supports the Center’s efforts to spotlight not only Fort Motte but also other key Revolutionary War sites in Jasper County, such as Old House Plantation and Purrysburg. Interpretive content within the exhibit offers additional insights into these lesser-known yet historically significant locations that played a role in shaping the region’s Revolutionary history.
